I was born at Newcombe Road, Fratton, Portsmouth on 21st August 1927.
The family lived at Cowplain, Denmead and Purbrook before I started school in September 1932. I was at the Church of England school, Purbrook until Easter 1934, when the new Council Junior School, Aldermoor Road Purbrook opened and was there until July 1938.
Purbrook Park County High School from September 1938 until July 1945.
Stockwell College, Bromley, Kent from September 1945 until July 1947, training as an Infants teacher.
Clanfield Primary School from July 1947 until April 1951.
Mufulira School, Northern Rhodesia from May 1951 until June 1952, when I flew back to England to marry Geoff Harris, an Assistant Inspector in the Northern Rhodesia Police, on 26th July 1952.
Returning to Northern Rhodesia in January 1953, we were posted to Ndola.
January 1954 to September 1954 I taught at the Infants School, Ndola.
14th February 1955 my first daughter, Patricia was born, then, when she was three months old we moved to Luanshya, and six months after that to Livingstone, from where we returned to England on Home Leave, On return to NR we were again posted to Livingstone, where Debbie was born on 3rd November 1956, and Joy on 8th July 1958.
We returned to England in 1959 and lived at Welton Place, Welton, Northamptonshire, where Wendy was born on 25th September 1960.
December 1960 saw us back in Northern Rhodesia at Mufulira, living in the Police Camp.
For the last year of our tour of duty there I taught at Eastlea Primary School, where the three eldest children were pupils.
Zambia Independence was now approaching, so when we returned to England for home leave it was decided that I should stay in England with the children when Geoff went back to NR for a year. After which Geoff trained as a teacher at King Alfred’s college, Winchester, and subsequently took a teaching post at Pennington. Since which time the family home has been in this area, in and around New Milton.
I returned to teaching in 1968 but had to take early retirement several years later due to a gastric ulcer.
Geoff died at work in 1980 when he had a heart attack.
By this time our daughters had finished their education and when they started work were all living away from home except Wendy, who lived with me until she bought a house in Milford-on-sea, and later met and married Brian Richardson. Since when I have lived alone.
