Towards the end of WW1, Wally was in the army.
The picture shows the Carraher family around 1919-1920, with Wally in a lance corporal’s uniform. The youngest child is Philip, born in May 1918.

Between the wars Wally was employed on passenger ships based in Southampton.
The photograph on the right is from his Merchant Navy Certificate number 880080, dated 29th October 1920, when he was a “scullion” on the SS “Araguaya”.

Wally married Clara Maud Felgate in September 1925, in Alverstoke.

They had one child, Sheila Maud Elizabeth Carraher, born 24th December 1926 at Parkeston, Essex

In WW2 he was in the Royal Navy, as a stoker 1st Class.

He died in the French ship “Branlebas” when it disappeared in a storm in the Channel, 14th December 1940. 

His name is on the Naval War memorial in Southsea, and he is of course listed in the Commonwealth War Graves Commission web site.
